A few local VW enthusiasts decided that Buses By the Bridge, a fun and very popular VW Bus camping event held each year in January at Windsor Beach on the shores of Lake Havasu, was so much fun they didn’t want to wait another whole year before having that much fun again. So they got together in May for a ‘mid-year’ Bus camp out down river at Fox’s On the River below the Parker Dam.
And FUN they had –so much fun that they decided to do it each year and invited more VW people to join them.
Fox’s On the River is right on the Colorado River’s edge on the Parker Strip. It has a nice RV campground with a playground, grassy area under trees, covered picnic area, a boat ramp, a sandy beach area, a restaurant (for those who don’t want to camp-cook) and a novelty ‘floating’ bar where boaters tie up during their river rides.
We packed up the ’61 Westy camper, loaded up our dogs, our water gear (swimsuits, floats, beach chairs, etc) and our favorite REI tent for additional sleeping quarters. Tommy drove the Microbus and Julia followed in the Honda, towing our son;s vintage jet boat down to the river camp. This was going to be a true family affair with two of our children and their families driving over from Phoenix to join us for the weekend campout. We all converged at Fox’s campground, meeting up with the other VW enthusiasts coming from as far away as the California coast. What a sight to see – our row of VW buses, tents and easy-ups all lined up! Others also brought boats or personal water craft and huge float devices. There were lots of opportunities to enjoy the water and tours of the river.
