Arriving at Firebird Raceway, shortly after 7:00 am on a blustery but sunny day in Arizona, there was already a crowd of cars lined up going through the entrance promising a good turn out for this year’s Bugorama.
While walking through the massive swap meet, probably the biggest one we’ve ever seen here, we wondered who would ever use this much “stuff” and misc parts, some new to some really greasy dirty ones.
In contrast to the massive swap meet, the race pits were surprisingly sparse with a small number of racers. And racing was a struggle all day between cars oiling the track and a spectacular crash during time trials (at probably over 100 mph, disintegrating the car; fortunately the driver was not seriously injured, only banged up and able to ‘walk away’ from the crash) which delayed the start of eliminations until well into the afternoon.
The car show awards were also late in the afternoon and many of the winners (between 1/3-1/2) had already left the show. The promotors should consider having the awards earlier before participants are ready to or need to go home, since it is Sunday afternoon.
It was an exciting day for us, receiving a trophy AND the special delivery of our ‘Bus Eyes’ from Kristine Salazar via VTO’s Stan Ford. (thanks Kristine and Stan).
Isn’t the ‘Fillmore look’ great on our ’63 Double Door?!
