Setting Up Camp-Yuma 08 Part 2

dsc024771dsc024781dsc024791

Staying together as we drive through Yuma isn’t as difficult as it first appeared it might be and we happily arrive at the fairgrounds in tandem where, we discover, we will be camping in a nice grassy area. There is even power and water available as well as restrooms and showers–almost a luxury!

Our caravan of VW Buses is the first to arrive for the weekend. Others will be joining us throughout the afternoon and evening, driving in from various parts of the country and travelling in almost every type of Volkswagen made.  We are fortunate to the first ones there and have first choice of camping spots. Each of us chooses a spot that appeals to us –everyone in their own little space and area of the grounds. Some circle their wagons; a couple find their own little private areas, and the rest of us just sort of line up along one side. We choose a spot next to Jim and Patricia and near a pole for easy power access (so we can use our computers and re-charge our phones). The dogs are eager to explore so we go for our first walk, checking out the fairgrounds; then back to set up camp. We put the awning up without the side curtains for the afternoon.  Jim and Patricia are off to Algodones for drugs (prescription meds) while the circled ‘wagons’ set up their canopies and ‘corn hole’ games, readying for some fun and games.

After having some lunch, we settle in for a relaxing afternoon of visiting, reading, napping, and dog walking and watching more vehicles are arrive.

YUMA Campout and Show

Part 1

Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway…dsc024491

There is a VW gathering in Yuma, Arizona http://www.visityuma.com/ and the ‘tribe’ from Lake Havasu plan a caravan leaving from the south side of town at 7:30 am…in the MORNING?!!  IS there such a time?! Yikes.

Our schedule frees up and we plan on joining them.  Packing up the Westy the night before, we manage to get out of bed– in the dark. The dogs seem to wonder what is going on since we are up before the sun is and have already had our weekly early morning no-walk day. Their leashes are out so they seem to think there is a chance for the walk, but soon settle into realizing it isn’t going to happen today with us so busy ‘getting ready’.  They get to go on this trip but until they are invited to get in the bus, they aren’t sure. They are excited and really good. They get right into the groove of riding before we even turn onto the highway!

dsc024392We stop at Starbucks for some hot tea for the road….something to make this early hour pleasant and partly out of habit of getting coffee in the past on early morning car show days. Besides, we are COLD! The temp is only 60’ and we are wearing sweatshirts and long pants—in Havasu!

We arrive at the meeting spot.  Almost everyone is there and it looks like a dog-fest: eight VW buses and seven dogs. Of course we have three of them and Cory and Diana have two.  Within a few minutes, everyone has arrived and we are ready to head out.

Merging onto the highway with the traffic and lights, we get spread out right away.  Art and Lana peel off to take their dog by the vets to check out a hotspot on her leg. With a high-powered engine in their bus, they expect to easily catch up with us.  We wind our way around the lower end of Lake Havasu, and on through Parker—a fun caravan of VW Microbuses; then head south to Quartzite for a scheduled refueling stop.  Cory is bringing up the tail and calls to say he is stopping in Parker for gas and will catch up.dsc02454

We pull into the Shell station in Quartzsite and everyone refuels and uses the facilities.  The dogs are excited to get out and sniff around this new area.  John has a major fuel leak, with gas appearing to go straight through the tank onto the ground. He has LOTS of advisors and discovers a fuel line connection is loose.  This repair time gives Art and Lana a chance to catch up with us. Their dog has been treated and is ready for the weekend.

Cory calls from Parker to say he has decided to turn back to Havasu and for us to go on. He is concerned with the way his bus is behaving.  Apparently the engine seems to be cutting out and since his recent experience of being towed into Havasu from I-40, he is cautious.

From Quartzsite, the drive is pleasant. There isn’t much traffic and we have a strong tail wind which is always a bonus when driving a VW Bus! The early morning light shows the scenery well.  We enjoy the craggy Koffa mountains and the transition from the Organ Pipe Cactus into an Ocotillo range.

dsc02467There appears to be activity at the Yuma Proving Grounds with large clouds of dust back against the hills. It is probably just a vehicle driving in the fine dust with a strong north wind. Still, it is fun to wonder if it is puffs of smoke from their practice rounds.

The road ahead appears to end, disappearing into the mountains with ranges on both sides which look as if they join as one; but of course, as we drive into it, the way opens up.

dsc02473The road winds around the end of some hills on the west and we are suddenly into farm lands– a stark contrast from the dry desert.  Yuma is known for winter-grown vegetables with iceberg lettuce and cotton grown as main crops. There is even a Lettuce Festival each year. http://www.yumalettucedays.com/

We are challenged once again with staying together, as we make our way through the traffic of Yuma. We know we are camping at the fairgrounds but only a few in our caravan of VW Buses have any idea of what part of town that is in and how to get to there, so we focus on staying together. Of course, if we do get separated, we could probably ask directions and eventually find it, but we would rather stick together and arrive at the same time as the rest of the group.

Back on the Road….

dsc01400

The weather is cooler today than it has been for the past few days. Still it is another beautiful morning.  We are up in time to say goodbye to Samantha, then Greg, and while Ginny is getting ready for work, we take our showers. After she leaves for work, we pack up the camper, our comfy Westfalia ‘home on the road, and head out for more adventures on the road, ready to explore Oregon and Washington. Before getting on the highway, we stop to fuel up; making sure our VW Microbus has a full tank and then take Hwy 26 toward the coast and Seaside.

Wow – this is a beautiful drive through dense woods of tall trees in many varieties. Nothing but trees, trees, and more trees! In some places we feel we are in a tunnel of trees.

dsc01402dsc01404

We catch a glimpse if Mount St. Helens, but miss the viewpoint where we could have had pulled off to get a picture, not knowing that was the ‘view’ until we were past..shucks.

Greg had told us to watch for the downed trees from the hurricane force winds last December. Hard to miss, they are amazing …. HUGE root systems exposed and entire hillsides downed.

dsc01407dsc01408dsc01409dsc01410dsc01411

The temperature is noticeably cooler as we get nearer to the coast. We begin seeing wisps of fog as we approach Hwy 101 and closer to Seaside it is quite foggy, but, once we get into town, the sun is peaking through and fog is lifting. Still, it is quite chilly and we are ready to get out our jackets!  We round a curve, and have to wait for traffic before pulling into a gas station. A split window VW bus towing a tear drop trailer passes by. We get to wave but we don’t see it soon enough to get a picture….would have been fun to have a picture of fellow VW Adventurers!

Hot August Nights….

dsc048401Wanting to put some miles on the ’61 Microbus to test the generator and 12 volt regulator– since the two previous regulators terminated within a few miles after installation–we headed out for Hot August Nights on upper McCulloch, in Lake Havasu City, AZ.  August nights in Havasu are HOT anyway but this is the Havasu Main Street Merchants Association’s take on the popular car show in Reno, Nevada, where classic cars, mostly street rods, gather to celebrate the dog days of summer and warm August nights (not always so warm in Reno but supposedly plenty of ‘hot’ cars to drool over!) . Havasu, on the other hand, is almost TOO warm and this particular night, there were only a few hardy souls braving the heat to show off their rides.  At 6:00 o’clock in the evening and, of course, without a/c in our ’61 VW bus, the 112° F was plenty warm, but we did get to park on the shady side of street.

People love the ’61 Westy Camper and we were barely parked and out of the bus when we had enthusiastic visitors.

dsc048331dsc048341dsc048351dsc048361dsc048371dsc048381dsc048391dsc048321

After walking around and enjoying some of the other vehicles, it was time for us to head home and get out of the heat. As we were climbing back in, one of the visitors was excited to see the VW microbus and asked to take a picture. Thanking us, he shared that he and his family were touring Arizona ‘on holidays’ from France.

For us, it’s all about ‘Bringing Joy to Folks on the Road’ and this time it was as easy as taking our bus for a ride on a Hot August Night and as we drove home, we were treated to a gorgeous Havasu Sunset!

A lazy day with family.

dsc01405Another beautiful morning, sunny and somewhat cool with dew – quiet and peaceful, we have a leisure start to the day doing nothing much. Everyone is sort of straggling out of bed, except Samantha and Jason who, we discovered, went out early this morning going to the store, and bringing home a whole Coho salmon for dinner. YUM!  Chris and Jessica stop by to say hello and then head out for the day.  Marcus decides to head home about 11 a.m. to beat the afternoon traffic.

Ginny joins us for another ride in our Microbus as we visit a Whole Foods store for provisions and a little extra shopping to stock up the Westy camper for the next leg of our trip.  This is a huge and rather fancy Whole Foods store, making the ones we get to shop in look a bit rag tag! We ‘sample’ our way through the store, realizing we must be hungry and should head home for some lunch. Tommy changed the oil in the VW in preparation for the next leg of the trip. The temperature has gotten warmer – 98’ is hot for the Portland area, especially with the humidity. Greg has just finished mowing the grass and we sit out under the apple tree enjoying the cool shade and fragrance of the freshly mown grass, letting the lazy afternoon ease into evening.

With Marcus headed home and Chris and Jessica not coming back, the whole salmon seems too big for the rest of us. Jason takes over, easily and expertly filleting the whole salmon handling it with confidence. Having grown up in this area, he knows a lot about fish, fishing and fish-filleting. He then joins Greg in preparing us a scrumptious meal of grilled cedar plank Salmon. We have another delightful and relaxed evening on the patio with family before continuing our great adventure on the road in the morning.

Camping at Fox’s

A few local VW enthusiasts decided that Buses By the Bridge,  a fun and very popular VW Bus camping event held each year in January at Windsor Beach on the shores of Lake Havasu, was so much fun they didn’t want to wait another whole year before having that much fun again. So they got together in May for a ‘mid-year’ Bus camp out down river at Fox’s On the River below the Parker Dam.

And FUN they had –so much fun that they decided to do it each year and invited more VW people to join them.

Fox’s On the River is right on the Colorado River’s edge on the Parker Strip. It has a nice RV campground with a playground, grassy area under trees, covered picnic area, a boat ramp, a sandy beach area, a restaurant (for those who don’t want to camp-cook) and a novelty ‘floating’ bar where boaters tie up  during their river rides.

We packed up the ’61 Westy camper, loaded up our dogs, our water gear (swimsuits, floats, beach chairs, etc) and our favorite REI tent for additional sleeping quarters. Tommy drove the Microbus and Julia followed in the Honda, towing our son;s vintage jet boat down to the river camp. This was going to be a true family affair with two of our children and their families driving over from Phoenix to join us for the weekend campout. We all converged at Fox’s campground, meeting up with the other VW enthusiasts coming from as far away as the California coast. What a sight to see – our row of VW buses, tents and easy-ups all lined up! Others also brought boats or personal water craft and huge float devices. There were lots of opportunities to enjoy the water and tours of the river.
