BBB-First Campout of the Year!

Out of the winter cold and into the warm Arizona sunshine, vehicles, participants and spectators from around the country swarmed to the shores of Lake Havasu, for the 15th annual Buses by the Bridge event.  Some braved the elements and drove, some flew, but all were determined to be a part of this fun event which was one of the biggest and best yet!

Hundreds of VW Buses, some accompanied by other VW vehicles, camped on the grass, in the trees, along the channel and on the beach, in Arizona’s Lake Havasu State Park at Windsor Beach.

Participants and spectators – adults and kids alike – were entertained with a variety of activities such as bus painting, kids‘ coloring contest and bouncy buildings, chili cook-off and kite flying.

Even Walter the Bus joined the fun and sat proudly among the other buses as one of family.  Visitors were invited to climb aboard and take in the view from the top deck. At night Walter offered ‘top floor’ dancing with neon lights flashing in time with a great music beat; and on Sunday, as the event came to a conclusion, Walter took a bus load of guests for a ride.

Raffle tickets were sold by the hundreds for prizes including,(among the usual t-shirts, drink cups, and key chains,) a handmade VW Bus Quilt, custom fire-buckets, a slot machine, a transmission, and the grand prize: a VW Engine!

Some didn’t wait for the raffle drawing, searching for and purchasing parts set out for sale among the campers and vendors. Also for sale were event t-shirts, tie-dyed tees and other items, VW designs, and toys.

A random group of participants were given Ballots and asked to choose their 10 favorite buses. The ‘Top 20’ buses were recognized and given specially engraved Coleman camping lanterns.

With bragging rights as the first campout of the year, Buses By the Bridge is put on each January by the London Bridge Bullies, a group of VW Bus enthusiasts in Lake Havasu City, AZ. Proceeds from the event are shared with children of Lake Havasu City through various local organizations.

Overflow at OCTO!

Another beautiful day in Huntington Beach (California) and another OCTO overflows,  drawing another huge crowd.  By 7:30 a.m. the lot was full, the gates were closed, and a long line was waiting to get in….that was just the buses for display. The spectators, of course could just walk in, paying a few dollars at the gate and a record number did just that to enjoy all the usual OCTO fun: great swap, vendors, raffles. and display of split-window buses.

Thanks to Steve Ford for the following great pictures!

A GRAND Experience

The GRAND COULEE DAM:

After a relaxing lunch in the rest area ‘park’ next to the river and the Gehrke Windmills, we drive the few miles to the Grand Coulee Dam dropping over the hill and easing the Westy down a steep grade of 6% – 10% to the Dam Arrival Center.

A massive 24 million cubic yards of concrete, enough to build a 4-foot-wide, 4-inch-deep sidewalk twice around the equator, it forms a lake that is 151 miles long by impounding the Columbia River.

The Grand Coulee Dam is a hydroelectric gravity dam with a hydraulic height of 380 feet — more than twice that of Niagara Falls.  Completed in 1941, the Grand Coulee Dam is the largestelectric power-producing facility and the largest concrete structure in the United States. It is the fifth largest producer of hydroelectricity in the world, as of the year 2008.

The dam itself doesn’t appear to be very high because of its length, but it is almost a mile across, is 1650 feet wide and 550 feet tall which is taller than the Great Pyramid at Giza.  In fact ALL the pyramids at Giza could fit within the total area of the base of the Grand Coulee Dam!

This massive reservoir, called Lake Roosevelt (officially Franklin Delano Roosevelt Lake after the president who was in office during the construction of the dam) covers 125 Square miles, stretches 150 miles from the Canadian Border to the Grand Coulee Dam, and has over 600 miles of shoreline, creating the largest lake and reservoir in Washington State.

The visitor center is an impressive educational exhibit showing the materials, methods and history of the dam, and offering fascinating and entertaining information with amazing ‘hands-on‘ displays such as a jack hammer, surveyor equipment, cut-away turbine models, different kinds of movable turbines from different dams around the country; videos of the indians who had lived in the area and were displaced by the flooding of the reservoir; short movies of different aspects of the dam.

One movie, “Fire and Water” was especially interesting to us explaining a theory of how this part of the world was formed by the ice-age floods.

First a flood of Lava that in some places is 10,000’ thick, then the glaciers flowed south and blocked the valley of the Clarks Fork River creating Lake Missoula which was 2000’ deep before it pushed the ice dam away.  Lake Missoula emptied in about 48 hours, flowing at the rate of 65 mph and moving everything in its way including rocks the size of houses and depositing them miles away.

Now the rocks sit alone in the farm fields of Eastern Washington. This flood reoccurred as many as a dozen times over a few hundred years, creating the Grand Coulee and Colombia River Gorge as well as the rolling farm lands (suspected as  ‘ripples’ of the receding waters)…All of this, which is what we have seen since the beginning of our trip and just driven through in the last couple of days, now makes sense. The Grand Coulee looks just like the Snake River Canyon only a bit wider.

The immense size and influence of the Columbia River and the Grand Coulee Dam is profound. Needless to say we are impressed and fascinated by this experience. Now we want to drive this trip in reverse so we can really appreciate what we have seen and driven across!

Can you believe it?…FOR SALE!

YES! You CAN OWN this sporty AWARD WINNING 1957 OVAL RAGTOP!

It is NOW FOR SALE!

This immaculate low milage 1957 Oval Sun Roof came to me from Pueblo, CO.   There was virtually no rust when I  disassembled this beauty for a complete restoration in 2000.  The rear clip had been replaced before I purchased it. This car is very straight.

My restoration included a 1641 Single Port built by Painter’s Grinding in Denver, replacing the original 36 HP engine, which is included with your purchase of this car. The Single Port 1641 is full of torque, and strong running.

The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt from a ‘67. The taller gears are great for highway cruising.

Other modifications include an adjustable beam, 4 new shocks, plus dropped spindles on the front.

In addition the brake system was rebuilt, the engine tin and fan shroud were powder coated, and the electrical system was converted to 12V. The original Motorola Radio is there for looks but at this time is a non-working accessory.

The Interior has the ’57 vintage style Mohair headliner, German Square Weave carpet, and reproduction rubber floor mats. The period-correct upholstery and interior panels are from West Coast Classics. The Stayfast Canvas ragtop cover works perfectly and does not leak.  During the restoration, all of the window rubber and door seals were replaced and the windows were tinted.

The paint is in excellent condition with only a few minor rock chips. The Billet Running Boards are painted on the vertical surface to match the fender color.

This classic white, blue and red paint style is complimented with the renowned “Rody” pin striping.
